What Role Does IP Transit Play in Your Business?

What role does IP transit paly

IP transit provides a connection to the internet, bridging your network with those of your clients, wherever they are in the world. All information transmitted via the internet — from the images you display on your site to the feedback that your customers provide — travel through the IP transit to reach its final destination.

IP transit providers fall into three categories: Tiers 1, 2, and 3. Tier 1 provided the most expansive reach and was dubbed the “backbone” of the internet. Tier 2 providers are smaller by comparison but still boast a broad range with multiple physical locations and data centers. Tier 3 centers are the lowest — they’re usually local providers with limited clientele.

To grant you access to a worldwide reach, Heficed works with reliable Tier 1 partners.

How Do BGP Networks Support Your Systems?

Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is a routing protocol that oversees how packets of information travel from the source to their destination, usually by referring to communication reachability information with edge routers. BGP falls into two categories: internal BGP (iBGP) and external BGP (eBGP). The former directs packets within a single autonomous system (AS), while the latter connects one AS to another. Both are based on TCIP/IP.

A BGP network ensures businesses that routers can still send and receive information should one internet path breaks down. The protocol directs the packets of data through another reconnection — an assurance that your end-users can even use your website or application, such as read the About Us page, view product pages, and send inquiries about your offers.

Are There Any Advantages in Using a Blended BGP IP Transit?

The decisions that BGP makes are based on a standard routing table (a repository of routes to specific network destinations) as well as a routing information base (which contains route information from external and internal peers).

Using a blended BGP IP transit enables the network administrator to set rules and policies for routing the packets of information. When you implement such a solution, you can use multiple ISPs simultaneously, peer with other networks, and receive more stringent protection from problems in the IS networks.

Should I use BGP or choose static routing configuration?

The appropriate routing configuration depends on your current systems and infrastructure.

Using a BGP protocol falls under dynamic routing, a type of routing configuration where it (for example, a BGP service) learns the routes to all networks and chooses the best path for the packets of information. Dynamic routing uses complex routing algorithms to perform routing operations and automatically updates the routing table every time a new route is discovered.

It is in contrast to static routing, a type of routing configuration that doesn’t use a routing protocol; instead, the routes are manually entered into the routing table via a configuration file. Thus, a static routing configuration is user-defined, non-adaptive, and cannot be modified, unless a network administrator implements changes.

Static routing is advised if you have very few devices to configure and if the routes aren’t likely to change. Static routing gives the network administrator full control over the network’s routing behavior. Additionally, it imposes a little load on the CPU of the router, because no routing protocol is needed. No reachability information update (which could amount to a few kilobytes) would consume the bandwidth.

If you’re looking for scalability and adaptability, however, BGP configuration is your ideal choice. Since the routing protocol controls the routes, the network administrator doesn’t have to update the routing table manually should the network expand or downsize. Additionally, dynamic routing overcomes any network failures; it only deems the crash as an “unreachable” destination and finds another path.
