Mission IPXO: IP Address Market Development

We have recently published a lot of information regarding the IP lease performance of the IP Address Market. We will continue to deliver as much information as possible.

Today, I will reveal what we see in the IP lease market’s future and our plans developing the IP Address Market that will turn to IPXO, planned for launch by April next year.

Firstly, let me remind you that we live in 2020, the age of the technologically advanced era, and seeing the progress makes you wonder if everything really is as advanced as it seems? As usual, let’s take a couple of steps back. I want to share what’s behind the idea of IPXO.

IPXO name does not stand for “IP kiss and hug”, but it translates into Internet Protocol Exchange Organization; we thought it would be great to give a name representing the mission we are on. Additionally, IPXO is a pretty short name, and we were fortunate to get the ipxo.com domain name (four-letter domain name!).

The initial idea for the IP Address Market came to our mind a couple of years ago when we understood the importance of IPv4 influence on our core services. That includes bare-metal, Heficed Connect, and cloud services. Once we launched the beta version of the IP Address Market (IPAM), we realized the importance of boarding the 3rd party IPv4 space. Later, we have noticed the importance of the 3rd party networks, where the customer can control their IP addresses for multiple locations globally. By the way, we have upgraded the IPXO website. That said, we turned our internal product into something that will positively impact the whole community. In addition to that, we aim to automate the things that have never been automated. That refers to RIR management, RPKI, route-objects, or other RIR functionalities and features.

Abuse is still our primary focus to make sure any IP will stay clean. That involves the KYC process and abuse desk management policy development. Later on, we will give you more information about what we do to keep things in order.

Development Process

Currently, we are in the process of rolling out some major features. Every new bit is available over the Heficed Terminal, and in April next year, we are relocating the IP Address Market to IPXO. The major features involve delegated RPKI, where IP holders will not need to create any route-objects manually; we will do this on the holders’ behalf. So, generally speaking, every IP holder will manage their IP resources using our platform.

Additionally, we would manage only those listed in the IP Address Market, not touching the ones that are not added to the platform. If the IP holder has /17 and added /19 out of the /17, we will be allowed to manage only the /19.

Another big step forward is introducing automated geolocation updates, which will be available shortly. We will start from IPInfo.io and MaxMind, where the tenant will request GEO updates over the control panel.

Full automation is the key for us, and we will keep on bringing new features that relate to the IPv4 provisioning. You may ask, will we support IPv6 anytime soon? Yes! We have plans to introduce IPv6 support next year.

The Next Steps

The short-term goals are to separate IP Address Market from Heficed and introduce it on IPXO. Including many other additional features that are on the roadmap.

Roadmap

Let’s get to it. I will try to list the high-level features, which we have already released and the ones that we are going to release shortly:

Launched

  • ASN database – the feature that helps verify if ASN exists to avoid any mistypes.
  • Reservation ID – some of the IP holders wanted to have the IPs leased for their customers only. Reservation ID is the piece of code that can be shared by the IP holder to the potential customer who would be able to access the IP subnets IP holder added to the IPAM. The IPs can be hidden from the address market.

60 Days Released

  • Delegated RPKI, or we can call it RPKIaaS to sounds more trendy. It allows us to manage all route object via Terminal. Moreover, it allows us to manage it without the IP holder’s help automatically.
  • I should say that we constantly improve the abuse desk policies and manage it every day, so we are releasing some tweaks that would be much more comfortable for the IP holders to see their IP space reputation.
  • Geolocation updates – we will enable automated updates from IPInfo and MaxMind, and later we plan to cover the rest of the databases. All the customers who will need to update the IP geolocation will be able to directly over the Terminal.
  • IP billing cycles – customers (lessees) will select the billing cycle they want to have for the IPs they order. By default, we will offer quarterly, bi-annual, and annual billing cycles.
  • Payout cycles – some of the IP holders suggested a great feature that allows selecting how frequently they want to have the payouts processed. We will offer the same cycles and the billing ones.

You can expect we will do more updates on the development progress, and after 60 days, we will publish one of the last blog posts that will include the development progress for IPXO.

Market Overview

Looking at the perspectives, a massive amount of IPv4 addresses in the market show in our previous blog posts. However, many of the enterprises notice the scarcity issue and will definitely keep IPv4 as a strategic asset. Some do not even realize that they can lease the IPv4 addresses while they do not use them.
